Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Eleven – “Now That I’m Saved” Ist John

This article is part 12 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

* Now that we are saved… “How shall we then live?” This is what most of the New Testament is about anyway, right?
* False teachers then and now… make it always important for Christians to study and grow and be able to ‘stand’ and ‘withstand’… (Hebrews 5:11-14).
* I John is all about TESTING those who claim to be teaching truth and all through this letter, he is fighting against false teachers while encouraging the brethren to STAND!
* Key Verse (I John 1:7) “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
a.)  ‘blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin’  ““Purifies” is in the present tense, which in the Greek means “continuously purifies.” This is a promise of on-going salvation–but not a salvation that can’t be lost. He’s not teaching once saved always saved. But he is teaching that salvation should be continuous, not occasional. I Jno. 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
b.) John does not define what ‘walk in the light’ is immediately, however he does present a number of tests which will help us understand what this is.

1. TEST ONE: ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SINS
I Jno. 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and
purify (PRESENT TENSE) us from all unrighteousness.”
    A. Promise: CONTINUAL FORGIVENESS if we do this. (Not ‘once saved always
        saved’ but ON GOING).
    B. Difficulty: MISTRANSLATION of ‘homologeo’ (confess) which actually means
        “ACKNOWLEDGE”
1.) John is not speaking of a legalistic requirement to come to front and confess
each sin in order to be forgiven.
2.) John is saying ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SINFULNESS and thus our
             continual need for His grace.
        3.) Example: I John 4:2-3, 15; 2 John 7 “acknowledge”. “Homologeo” = never used
             of confessing sin in NT.
4.) The word used for confession of sin is usually “exomologeo,” as in James 5:16
             and Matthew 3:6.
   C. Compare I John 1:8-10 The writer uses the term “claim” (“confess”) “claim”.
   D. The contrast is with refusing to admit that we sin. Thus the test is not whether we
have confessed each sin, but whether we ADMIT, ACKNOWLEDGE that we are
sinners… thus in need of God’s grace and mercy. So long as we refuse to do
        this… we are denied SALVATION.
2. TEST TWO: LOVE
    I John 2:3-11 Read
    A. Compare this with John 15:10-14 Read “My command is this…”
1.) Jesus says, OBEY MY COMMANDS… His command = LOVE EACH
              OTHER!
2.) Compare this with Matthew 7:12; Luke 10:25-28; Romans 13:3-10; Galatians
              5:14; James 2:8
3. TEST THREE: DOING RIGHTEOUSNESS
I John 2:29 “If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what
is right has been born of him.”
     A. “What is right” = better translated as “righteousness” or even “justice”
     B. Amos 5:7-24 (especially verses 7, 10-12, 15, 21-24)
     C. John is not speaking of attending services, giving etc… he is speaking more
about caring for people God cares about.
     D. John expands on ‘Doing righteousness’ which is opposed to a life of (practicing)
          sin. (cf. Romans 6:1-2)
1.) I Jno. 3:3-6 Christians don’t continue in sin… we REPENT AND KEEP
GROWING. WE NEVER DEFEAT SIN COMPLETELY, BUT WE KEEP
GROWING IN GRACE, AND PUTTING MORE AND MORE SIN
               BEHIND US.
2.) I Jno. 3:10-11 Do what is right = really do righteousness. This connects loving
each other with doing righteousness…. They are not two commands but ONE
               BIG ONE.
3.) I Jno. 3:16-18 Love always requires action (the same as with faith!)
4.) I Jno. 3:22-23 How can we truly believe and not obey?
4. TEST FOUR: THE HOLY SPIRIT
I John 3:24 “Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is
how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”
    A. I Jno. 2:20
1.) “Anointing” is a reference to the Spirit (Acts 10:38; 2 Cor. 1:21-22). Luke
declares that Jesus was anointed by the Spirit (Luke 4:18). Of course,
“Messiah” and “Christ” mean “the anointed one,” referring most
immediately to kingship and the oil of anointing ceremonially used in
               designating a man king.
2.) Jesus was ‘anointed’ with the Spirit at his immersion… then his miracles and
               ministry began…
3.) We are anointed at ours as we become a ‘royal priesthood’ (1 peter 2:9).
          4.) Cf. Ephesians 1:20-23; Ephesians 2:1-7; Revelation 1:6 (KJV)
          5.) I John 5:6-8 “truth” refers to truth about Jesus- the Gospel- (I Jno. 2:21-23;
               Jno. 14:6; 2 Cor. 11:10; Gal. 2:5; Heb. 10:26-27; Heb. 8:10-12)
6.) It’s characteristic of our new life in Jesus that the Spirit indwells us and
teaches us how to be more and more like Jesus–to have faith, to love in action
and deed, and to do righteousness.
     B. John 3:8 tells us the Spirit works but the only way we can tell is by the effect seen
          in our lives.
          1.) I Jno. 4:2-3 Read
5. TEST FIVE: ACKNOWLEDGING APOSTOLIC TEACHING
    A. I Jno. 4:6
    B. In John’s way of thinking, there are only two kinds of people
         a.) SAVED                     b.) LOST
              Faith                              Deny Jesus
              Admit sinfulness           Deny sinfulness
              Love others                   Hate others
              Do righteousness          Don’t do righteousness
Possess the Spirit          Don’t have the Spirit
              Purify himself               Continue in sin
Acknowledge                Rejects the auth. Of apostles
              authority of the apostles
    C. John is speaking to Christians who understand that without His grace… they are
         lost in sin.
a.) Phil. 2:12-13 “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only
in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to
work out (mine out/ dig deep) your salvation with fear and
trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act
                                     according to his good purpose.”
i.) Paul is encouraging Christians to “mine out” their salvation. ie Explore the
                  depths and grow.

These are the five tests of First John by which he explains who is walking in the light.

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Ten “Now That We’re Saved” (Hebrews)

This article is part 11 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

BALANCE is the goal not only in our study of  “Amazing Grace” but all scripture. Just how SECURE is a Christian?
* Hebrews = not usually studied in a class on grace. Incredibly important!
* Background:
a.) Law of Moses – Constantly refers to TEMPLE AND ANIMAL SACRIFICES
   b.) Temple – Holy Place/Holy of Holies/Ark of Covenant
(Cries of animals/trumpets/songs/incense/and praises to God)
c.) Leviticus 1 – Sacrifice for atonement described
d.) Only High Priest could enter Holy place and ONLY on Day of Atonement (Yom
         Kippur)
e.) Holy of Holies = the Shekinah – “GLORY OF GOD”. Blood offered for sins of the
people here by the High Priest once a year.
f.) Lev. 16 The curtain (or veil) that blocked the entrance to the Holy of Holies was torn
when Jesus was crucified, evidencing God’s opening of this Most Holy Place to all
who’d be saved through Jesus. The tearing of the veil also means that God himself
is no longer hidden from his people. After all, this is where God dwelt. Because the
“mercy seat” was above the ark of the covenant, we can now approach the “throne
        of grace” with confidence.
    g.) Lev. 16:2 “mercy seat”
h.) Hebrews 4:16 “throne of grace”

1. “ONCE FOR ALL” and “PERFECT FOREVER”
    A. Hebrews 7-9
         1.) Hebrews 7:27-28
a,) Here the author contrasts Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice with the constantly
repeated sacrifices of the priests at the Jewish temple, required by the Law
of Moses. Moreover, Jesus’ sacrifice made him “perfect forever.” No further
sacrifice will ever be required of Jesus.
2.) Based on Hebrews 7:23-25 Read. (Jesus will never die = “save completely”
Christians. His intercession for us is as unending as His life.
3.) Now, we see that “forever” means for as long as Jesus lives. When he makes
his followers “perfect forever,” that means for just as long as Jesus lives!
   B. Hebrews 9:11-12 Notice “once for all”
   C. Hebrews 9:25-28 “once for all” “to do away with sin”
1.) Moses covenant = inferior because provided temporary salvation
2.) After priest performed sacrifice/ sinner = forgiven until sinned again
3.) Forgiveness was based on repeating the sacrifices
4.) Forgiveness for Christian is continuous and unending.
        5.) Made perfect forever
    D. Hebrews 10:1-4 Notice …“it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly
year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship…. Once for all….”
         1.) Hebrews 10:9-10, 12-14
a.)  Here’s the gospel in a nutshell. Jesus offered one sacrifice which resulted
in the forgiveness of all those “being made holy” forever. Forever! Perfect
forever. Just as Jesus himself was made perfect forever by his obedient
sacrifice, so are his followers. We, of course, aren’t really perfect, but we
are counted as perfect. However, this assumes that we are yielding to
God’s efforts to make us holy in fact.
          2.) Hebrews 10:15-18
          3.) Hebrews 10:19-22
2. FALLING AWAY – Most severe warning in the Bible
    A. Hebrews 10:26-27 (cf. vs.18)
1.) Baptized into Christ is ‘once for all’ no more …
    B. If we throw away salvation = no more sacrifice left.
    C. This is so bad, that Martin Luther questioned the inspiration of Hebrews!
3. Consider these things…
    A. This is only when we deliberately continue to sin…
    B. This is opposite of being penitent…
1.) To be saved we must be penitent/ to stay saved… soft/penitent heart.
2.) Practical terms: IF WE NO LONGER TAKE JESUS AS OUR LORD/TURN
OUR BACKS ON HIM… OUR HEARTS BECOME HARD / WE ARE LOST
AND CAN NOT COME BACK. (BEYOND REPENTANCE.)
    C. However, if a Christian has left the fellowship of the church, sinned greatly, and
eventually repented and returns, then he cannot have fallen away (like the
Hebrew writer refers to), because it’s impossible for those who’ve fallen away to
repent. No more sacrifice for sin remains.
    D. Lk. 15 God is always ready to forgive…but if one comes to Jesus and receives his
Spirit and then QUENCHES THE SPIRIT / TURNS AWAY AND REFUSES TO
COME BACK… THERE IS NO MORE SACRIFICE.
         1.) I Timothy 4:2
         2.) 2 Peter 2:20-22
         3.) Hebrews 6:4-6
         4.) Hebrews 12:15; Dt. 29:18-20
a.) Danger = relying on grace and think you are safe even though one persists
                   on going their way.
b.) Falling away = the end of a bad path of rebellion, unbelief and
disobedience. Dangerous because we can become INSENSITIVE to our
                   own sin.
              c.) Mark 4:18-19 “… the DECEITFULNESS of wealth…”
              d.) Hebrews 3:13 “sins deceitfulness”
5.) THE DANGER OF SIN = THE DECEITFULNESS OF IT. GETTING FARTHER
              AND FARTHER AWAY FROM JESUS.
6.) Just before the warning of Heb. 10:26ff the writer says, (Heb 10:23-25) “Let us
hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good
deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day
              approaching.

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Nine – Romans

This article is part 10 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

* Romans has always been an exciting book to study… yet finding the balance Paul
speaks of has been difficult for many who have written commentaries as well as those
who have presented sermons based on Romans.
* Debaters have argued from the same book of Romans for and against FAITH ONLY
SALVATION. The problem of coming to the scriptures with a bias, has led many into a
   position which Paul never intended.
* BALANCE IS NEEDED… Any truth can be taken to extreme and made into a false
   doctrine.
* Paul’s letter to the Roman church is one which is truly amazing. As usual he is
concerned with the problem of legalism… Yet as he writes he is sure to include the
encouragement which Christians of all ages still hunger for.
* Thus, it is time for some encouragement! Look at how grace works after salvation
   according to Paul.
* “We generally start with the assumption that the rules dramatically change after
salvation. And to this extent, we’re right. But we assume the standard gets tougher, that
God holds us to an ever-higher standard. But while there’s a germ of truth in that
thought, it misses the much larger point. Although God does have very high expectations
for his children, his forgiveness is far greater for the saved than for the being-saved.”
* The most needed (over-looked) passage: Romans 5:8-10
a.) Justification (Above charge/No indictment) – Our Pardon
b.) The Means of Pardon (cross)/ The place of Pardon (“in Christ”) WHILE STILL
         ENEMIES
* The most extraordinary passage: Romans 5:9-10
a.) Pay attention to and discuss  “MUCH MORE”
b.) What does this say to us NOW as opposed to when we were saved?
c.) How clean were we when just saved? How many sins were charged against us
        then?
d.) When immersed ALL SINS WASHED AWAY/ NEW LIFE… but this is how sins
        continue to be washed!
* Most misunderstood passage: Romans 7:18-24
* Paul knows he cannot measure up/ always messing up/ concludes with a plea- how
can he be rescued? He has been saved. Immersed for remission of sins. His answer
is not re-baptism.. it is something more!

1. Romans 8
    A. Vs. 1 NO LOST CHRISTIANS EVEN IN WEAK MOMENTS
    B. Vs. 2 Law of sin and death = when one sins he dies
         1.) Romans 1:32
         2.) Romans 5:12
3.) Paul says WE ARE FREE FROM THIS LAW
    C. Vs. 3-4
1.) REQUIREMENTS OF LAW = FULLY MET IN US
2.) Not occasionally met! Not met when we ‘do’ things… but because HE did!
              *  Now let’s look at the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit…
    D. Vs. 5-9
(Paul says that we are supposed to live according to the Spirit. No. That’s not
right. He says we do live according to the Spirit. It’s not a condition or maybe. It’s
a fact. All Christians do this. Therefore, Paul says, we Christians have our minds
set on the Spirit’s desires. Now,  we’ve discussed the Spirit before. The Spirit
works in us to make us ever-more holy, to give us joy, to give us gifts to be used
in God’s service, to bear the fruit of the Spirit.
1.) How important is the ‘mind set’?
         2.) What does this mean?
3.) How this supposed to affect the Christians life?
4.) How close does this make us to God? (John 17:20-23) “… you in me and I in
              you..”
    E. Vs. 10-11
1.) Begin chapter with ALL CHRISTIANS ARE SAVED ALL THE TIME!
2.) ALL CHRISTIANS HAVE THE SPIRIT ALL THE TIME!
3.) There is no ‘in and out’ of Christ as we do good and bad – saved by Jesus!
     F. Vs. 12-14 (by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body)
1.) Rather than dying because of sin/ the Spirit helps us put sin to death. NO JOY
              IN SIN!
2.) Condition – “if” because we can ‘quench’ the Spirit (what this mean?)
         3.) Ephesians 2:8-10
4.) WE ARE HIS CHILDREN vs. 14 (NOTE: PAUL DOES NOT TEACH ONCE
SAVED ALWAYS SAVED…. HE DOES TEACH ONCE SAVED NOW SAVED!
IT IS EASY TO FALL FROM A ‘SYSTEM’ (LAW/WORKS), BUT IT IS HARD
TO FALL FROM A RELATIONSHIP (CF. LK. 15:11-32).
5.) We have used the pulpit and periodicals far too long to ‘run down’ brethren,
and take away their hope and confidence. Paul didn’t do this. He gave
Christians confidence, yet warned against taking grace for granted…
              BALANCE.
     G. Vs. 15-17 ABBA FATHER – WE BELONG TO HIM!
     H. Vs. 18-25 Future glory for the Christian is waiting!!!
      I. Vs. 26-27 THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US IN PRAYER
     J. Vs. 28-37 More than conquerors (THAT’S WHO WE ARE ‘IN AND BECAUSE OF
         JESUS)
     K. Vs. 38-39 WHO CAN SEPARATE US FROM OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?!

“WE DON’T EARN OUR SALVATION! WE RESPOND TO OUR SALVATION. REDEMPTION BRINGS US INTO CHRIST AND HIS FAMILY… THE “CREATION OF GOD”. CREATED TO DO GOOD WORKS. IF WE AS HIS NEW CREATION DO NOT DO THE GOOD WORKS HE PLANNED… WE HAVE FRUSTRATED THE VERY PURPOSE OF OUR SALVATION.”

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Eight – Secure In Grace

This article is part 9 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

* HOW HIGH DO YOU RANK ‘SECURITY’ in your life?
* As a child grows up – biggest fear = “Will mom and dad stop loving me…. ‘throw me out’
when I fail/ don’t do good?” SECURITY IS A BIG ISSUE FOR US ALL. Even in
marriage…. Is a child/teenager/married couple security based on HOW
WELL/CONSISTENTLY YOU PERFORM OR ON  SOMETHING ELSE?
* What about in Christ/relationship with God (VERTICAL)- Do you FEEL secure?
  – What is this security based on? PERFORMANCE OR GRACE?
* What about within the body of Christ (HORIZONTAL)- Do you FEEL Secure?
  – What is this security based on? PERFORMANCE OR GRACE?
* Which do you FEEL more secure in: VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL?
  – Why???
* What is it about GRACE that make one FEEL more secure than PERFORMANCE?
* Describe SECURITY of Christian in terms of a FAMILY WITH CHILDREN.
* Why do you think dad put “FALLING FROM GRACE” as his next lesson?
____________________________________________________________________________

Introduction:
a.) Are you an HONEST/SINCERE/BELIEVER IN JESUS? “Yes” = NOT A HYPOCRITE
“You don’t qualify! By definition you COULD NOT be a hypocrite. A hypocrite “never
intends to be what he pretends to be.” Are you pretending to be a disciple? If the
answer is “no” then you are a disciple. But you say, “I feel so weak and human and
filled with sin and immaturity.” This is not hypocrisy. This is the way normal human
beings feel! This is why we are studying, “GRACE, GOD’S POWER TO BE(COME)”.
b.) Ephesians 2:8-10
c.) We will be looking at SECURITY/GRACE re: SALVATION (Vertical) and BRETHREN
(Horizontal) as well as other things as time permits…What is not covered, we can
look at later if you wish.

1. SALVATION – VERTICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD (one to ONE)
    A. NOT human regulation IT IS DIVINE RECONCILIATION
         1.) Ephesians 2:16
    B. NOT the cessation from some sin IT IS THE CANCELLATION OF ALL SIN
         1.) I John 1:7 (Continually cleansing)
    C. NOT law/works (delighting in/depending on/performance of law keeping) IT IS
BEINGDELIVERED FROM AND BEING MADE DEAD TO THE LAW.
        1.) Galatians 3:11,13.
    D. NOT human reformation/determination- IT IS DIVINE REGENERATION.
         1.) John 3:3, 5
         2.) Colossians 2:12
         3.) 2 Corinthians 5:17
    E. NOT becoming exceptionally good- IT IS BEING “IN CHRIST” AND BEING MADE
        ACCEPTABLE TO GOD.
       1.) Ephesians 1:6-7
2.) Faulty (sinful/forgiven), weak (can’t stand long/fall often), human (‘let people be
            people’) disciples = A   C   C   E   P   T   E   D.

3.) What does ‘ACCEPTED’ mean in this context?
4.) Which is more saved/accepted – the beginner or the mature Christian?
5.) “Salvation = COMPLETENESS IN CHRIST NOT COMPETENCY IN
             CHARACTER!”
       6.) I Corinthians 15:10; Ephesians 3:8
   F. NOT of man, self, works, law, boasting – IT IS BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH
       WHICH STOPS ALL BOASTING.
1.) Growing, learning, maturing, heaven bound!!!
       2.) 2 Corinthians 5:17
       3.) Galatians 2:20-20
2. FALSE CONCEPTS
    A. Once saved always (no matter what) saved.
    B. Once saved never sure, never confident, never ‘heaven bound’, always doubting
         andfearful ‘saved’.
    C. “Surely I can do 10% and God do the rest” salvation. (GIFT!!!)
    D. ‘I have nothing to do with it’ salvation – ie UNIVERSALISM. (GIFT OFFERED
         MUSTBE RECEIVED)(Medicine)
**These are extremes and must be rejected. The Bible speaks of the gift which
demands a response (obedience) from man (which in no way qualifies as
         EARNING ANYTHING.
3. GRACE/FAITH or LAW/WORKS
    A. “If you base salvation on law/works, you will never tolerate or come to understand
         thegrace/faith foundation…..” Read from Workbook. Pg. 37
    B. “Law/works says, “Sing better (louder) if you want to go to heaven”. Grace/faith
says, “I sing because I’m heaven bound.” Law/works says, “if you don’t get more,
you’re not going.” (Read from Work book. Pg. 37-38
4. HOW SECURE ARE WE IN THE HORIZONTAL RELATIONSHIP
    A. What is “FELLOWSHIP” based on? “Who is my brother and sister?”
    B. How secure do you FEEL with others in the body of Christ?
    C. What example can you point to which illustrates YOUR FEELINGS of ‘secure’ or
         ‘insecure’?
    D. What might be some things Christians CAN DISAGREE ON and still be ‘one in
         spirit’?
    E. What might be some things Christians CANNOT DISAGREE ON which endangers
the‘one in spirit’ stand we should have?

The survey to be filled out by the class to show how brethren don’t always agree on everything…. How does a proper understanding help Christians in dealing with differing opinions? Do brethren have to agree on every thing? Answer: No! It would be nice, but we just don’t. This being the case, WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THE GRACE CONCEPT WITH EACH OTHER AS WELL AS KNOW THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD. Is this easy? No. Because GRACE/FAITH CANNOT WORK UNDER LAW/WORKS,

   FOR THE CLASS:
Here is a survey. It’s not a test. I’m not going to grade this. I just want to see how much disagreement we have over some pretty basic things.Mark the correct interpretation of the quoted passages? You may only mark one answer per question, and you must choose one.

1. (2 Cor 13:12)  Greet one another with a holy kiss.
   a. Says what it means; means what it says.
   b. No longer applies today at all.
   c. Applies today but only the underlying principle (greet one another warmly) applies.
   d. Other: __________________________________________________________
2. (
Rom 1:27)  In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
   a. Says what it means; means what it says.
   b. No longer applies today at all.
   c. Applies today but only the underlying principle (sex with a temple prostitute is wrong)
       applies.
   d. Other: __________________________________________________________
3. (
Mat 5:29)  If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
   a. Says what it means; means what it says.
   b. No longer applies today at all.
   c. Applies today but only the underlying principle (lust is a deadly sin) applies.
   d. Other: __________________________________________________________
4. (
Mat 5:25-26)  “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
   a. Says what it means; means what it says.
   b. No longer applies today at all.
   c. Applies today but only the underlying principle (resolve personal dispute through
compromise, but when settlement fails, financial disputes are appropriate for the
    courts) applies.
   d. Other: __________________________________________________________
5. (
Mat 5:22)  But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

1 Cor 16:1-3)  Now about the collection for God’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 3 Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem.

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Seven – Jesus Christ The Believer’s Grace

This article is part 8 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

In the beginning was (GRACE) the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2  He was with God in the beginning. 3  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13  children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) 16  Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17  For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-5, 10-17)

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Six – Vertical And Horizontal

This article is part 7 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

(This lesson is taken from “Amazing Grace – God’s Power To Be”
* Is the church a denomination?  Of course not! Yet the church divides.
* BIG TASK = GOING DEEPER/ BROADEN OUR UNDERSTANDING NT CONCEPTS.
* (J.W. Debate) Dad conducted a small debate with a Jehovah Witness when he was a young minister. The debate was over, IDENTITY OF THE N.T. CHURCH. Dad began: “AD 33, Jerusalem, Pentecost, Acts 2:38, Organization, Worship… all explained with scriptures to back up each point. Then his opponent began… The NT Church is a PRAYING CHURCH, A LOVING CHURCH, A SOUL WINNING CHURCH, A UNITED CHURCH…all with scriptures to back up each statement.
* Need to re-examine our approach… What dad said was not wrong… but he recognized that something was missing.
* What a/GRACE? Ephesians 2:4-10 Read NEED TO GROW /BROADEN OUR U/STANDING/ MARVELOUS CONCEPT “God’s power to GROW”.
* Not cheap grace (Jude 4/ Romans 6:1-2)
* Not small grace (Romans 5:8-10) It’s a ‘much more’ grace!

1. PROCESS OF SALVATION
    A. Hearing the Gospel (Romans 10:17)
    B. Believing/ faith/ trust (Romans 10:17; Heb. 11:1,6; James 2:17, 26)
    C. Obedience (John 14:21, 23-24)
*** These are not important by themselves. These are important only because the
end result is BEING ADDED TO, PUT IN, RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD thru
          JESUS CHRIST.
*** BEING ADDED TO THE CHURCH, PUT INTO CHRIST AND IN RELATIONSHIP
WITH GOD THRU JESUS MEANS ONE IS REDEEMED, SANCTIFIED,
         FORGIVEN, SEALED AND HEAVEN BOUND….
*** THIS MAKES ALL THE OTHER THINGS IMPORTANT!
     D. One may say, “I don’t believe in repentance, confession, and baptism…. I
BELIEVE IN JESUS! HE COMMANDS IT AND I OBEY IT! Yet it all finds value in
the ‘end result’ of relationship with God thru Jesus.
2. FIRST CENTURY EXAMPLES – SALVATION BY GRACE THRU FAITH
     A. Pentecost (Acts 2)
     B. Samaritans (Acts 8:12)
     C. Saul (Paul) (Acts 9; 22)
     D. Cornelius (Acts 10)
     E. Philippian jailor (Acts 16:25-33)
3. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL (Ephesians 2:8-10)
     A. VERTICAL = MOST IMPORTANT – 1st Place – 1st Allegiance – Cause/Effect –
         Power
          1.) Matthew 6:33; Luke 14:25-33
2.) All other relationships/allegiances= governed by this
3.) Law and prophets hang on this one.
4.) Faith is the cable that “gets hold of God”. It’s not how much faith or how great
the faith…the power is in the OBJECT of faith which is vital.
5.) Give up everything…. But never give up your connection w/God. (HUB OF
               WHEEL)
4. THE HORIZONTAL RELATIONSHIP  IS ALSO IMPORTANT (Can’t have vertical w/o
     horizontal)
     A. Look up to God – look out to people (wife/husband/children/friends/work/enemies)
     B. “I belong to Christ” THEREFORE….
     C. Family – (2 Timothy 3:15)(Acts 2:36-38, 41, 47)
     D. Horizontal relationship = seen in FRUIT/ACTION/ cf. James 2:24-26
     E. I John 1:7 “Fellowship” w/each other.
     F. I John 3:14-18 “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love
each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a
brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life
residing in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his
life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If
anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no
pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us
not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Conclusion: Yes, grace is all about being saved and remaining saved…. We will learn more about this in the weeks coming. Yet it is also about the horizontal (people) relationships we as God’s children have.
I Corinthians 12:12-27 The hand does not hate the foot. The eyes are not jealous of the toes. WE ARE MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.

Amazing Grace Bible Class – Lesson Five – Saved By Grace

This article is part 6 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9  not by works, so that no one can boast. 10  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-10).
 The Christian’s life is:
 1. 100% GRACE:
    A. Everything we have received, do receive, and will receive from God = GRACE.
    B. Grace = an UNMERITED/UNEARNED  gift.
    C. Grace = not withheld because I am a sinner… nor is it made less because I am a
sinner…It is because we are sinners that grace is so important to the Christian
         life.
2. 100% FAITH:
     A. Everything I receive by grace is accepted on the principle = FAITH.
     B. Not mixed with work 40% / 60% – 75% / 25% – 90% / 10% … all by FAITH.
     C. Negatively speaking: NOTHING can be received from God accept by FAITH
Paul says, “By grace through faith” (Can it be said, “by faith only”?)
If so… Why? If not…Why? (When Paul speaks of FAITH in Romans 4,
he is certainly not speaking of that which DOES NOTHING IN RESPONSE)
     D. This faith is shown to us by Abraham, (KJV)=(“WORKS” (MERIT) VS
(“COUNTED” CREDIT)- (Romans 4 and 5:2)
3. 100% SALVATION: (Can Christians hold confidently to salvation?) YES
     A. Discussion with Baptist minister and dad… (Something to think about)
1.) Dad – “You believe in faith only salvation.” “Right? ” (Ministers reply) “YES”
               Dad “No, that’s wrong”
2.) Baptist minister “You believe in water salvation.” “Right?” (Dad’s reply)
“YES” (Minister’s reply) “No, that’s wrong”
3.) Dad – “You believe in once saved always saved.” “Right?” (Minister reply)
“YES” (Dad replies) “No, that’s wrong!”
4.) (Minister) – “You believe in once saved maybe saved.” “Right?” Dad’s
response“ “YES” (Minister) “No, that’s wrong!”
      B. What do we believe? Confident salvation or not?
      C. Let’s look at some options (on board)
Note: To do this draw two parallel vertical lines about an inch apart.
At the bottom place “Baptism” and at the top “Heaven”. Representing the life of a
Christian, typically we draw the line going up, then out (sin) and then back in, up
a bit, out (sin) then back in etc…
The question here is: ARE CHRISTIANS IN AND OUT OF SALVATION LIKE
THIS? HOW BIG IS GRACE? ROOM FOR TIMES WHEN WE SIN, REPENT,
CORRECT PATH… OR DO WE ‘FALL FROM GRACE’ HAVE TO GO FORWARD,
CONFESS ETC… TO ‘GET BACK IN’? WHAT ABOUT SINS WE FORGET
          ABOUT?
          Verses to consider (a.) Romans 6:1 (b.) Ephesians 2:8; I John 1:7; I John 2:1-2)
WHERE DOES ‘ABUSE’ COME INTO THE PICTURE?
  4. 100% NOT: (Disclaimers)
     A.  Disclaimers
          1.) Not of self
          2.) Not of works
          3.) No room for boasting
4.) Irrevocable (once saved DOES NOT MEAN ‘do what you want’ saved)
5.) Doubtful (once saved maybe saved)
     B. Nothing I can do about God’s grace but ACCEPT OR REJECT it.
5. 100% GIFT OF GOD
     A. Not cheap (Acts 20:28; Isaiah 53:10; Romans 3:26; 2 Cor. 9:15; Rom. 5:15)
6.  “For we (100%) are God’s (100%) handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good
works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”
     A. Saved by Grace/Faith principle NOT Law/Works standard.
     B. Illustrating the principle with simple semantics (Eph. 2) “…good works..”
i.)  Eph. 2:10 – change “works” to ‘spiritual fruit’ (Cf. Gal. 5:22-24)
ii.) “workmanship”, ”workmen”, “unto good works”, “ordained”, “Walk in them” =
              FRUIT
iii.) Change Law to LORD, and Works to FRUIT fits perfectly in the plan of God,
              and mind of disciple.
iv.) To base salvation/ Christian life on achievements, quotas, measures of growth,
contributions… for the good of the church = wrong. (“another gospel”)
          v.) Law/works results in GUILT (Romans 7:23-24)
1.) Read Work book pg. 19 (Amazing Grace God’s Power To Be” Workbook by
                    Jack Exum
7. Special Study: WHO IS SAVED – OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST
     A. Questions:
1.) What does a person need to know to be saved?
2.) If I lose my salvation, am I still a Christian?
3.) Is there such thing as an unsaved Christian?
     B. Light from Hebrews 3:7-19
1.) IF today’s Christians are guilty of the same sins as the Israelites = suffer same
               fate..
               a.) What is that fate?
2.) These sins are two types, what are they? REBELLION and UNBELIEF.
a.) These are synonymous for “hardening your hearts” “testing” “trying” God
b.) Having a heart that is always going astray. (Israel = 40 years!!!)
3.) But the lesson works in both ways…
a.) Christians not guilty of these sins WILL enter “into God’s rest”
4.) What is the opposite of:
               a.) Unbelief — FAITH
               b.) Rebellion — SUBMISSION
c.) Hardness of heart — (soft heart) seen in PENITENT/REPENTING
5.) A Christian ceases to be a Christian when he LOOSES FAITH/REPENTANCE
and remains a Christian as long as he CONTINUES IN FAITH AND
REPENTENCE,  Hebrews 10:26-27. “If we deliberately keep on sinning….”
                1.) Salvation = lost – deliberately  continuing a life of sin… ie rebelling/hard
                     heart/refusing to repent.
                      a.) “Rebellion” = __________________
                      b.) “Sinning continuously” = _______________________
2.) How does grace help us here?
3.) How are believers made “perfect forever”? Hebrews 10:1
4.) How does the Holy Spirit fit into this?
5.) What does a penitent, teachable, moldable Christian life produce?
                     Galatians 5:22-23
6.) Bottom line: The Christian who loses faith, and the heart becomes
hardened and cannot and will not repent loses salvation… is not a
Christian… is lost. Christians who do not lose faith, and who’s hearts do
not become hardened… are saved from “spiritual cradle” till the time they
                     die.

Amazing Grace Bible CLass – Lesson Four – Dealing With Extremes

This article is part 5 of 20 in the series Amazing Grace Bible Class

“I’M UNASHAMED” (Composed by dad, Bob and myself)
“I’m unashamed of my Savior and Lord,
So unashamed of his wonderful word;
I’m unashamed of his powerful sword,
He’s mine, yes mine to share.

I’m unashamed of the thorns that were pressed,
So unashamed of his colorless dress;
I’m unashamed to sigh on his breast,
He’s mine, yes mine to share.

I’m unashamed of his teaching so bold;
So unashamed of the heaven foretold;
I’m ashamed to found in his fold,
He’s mine, yes mine to share.

I’m unashamed just to stand in his grace
So unashamed just to serve in his place,
I’m unashamed just to finish the race,
He’s mine, yes mine to share.

I’m unashamed of the wonders he rought,
So unashamed of the wisdom he taught,
I’m unashamed of salvation He brought
He’s mine, yes mine to share.

I’m unashamed of the parables told,
So unashamed of his challenge so bold,
I’m unashamed to be placed in his mold,
He’s mine, yes mine, to share.

Primary purpose of lesson = BRING GRACE INTO FOCUS/BALANCE.  Grace=The life of grace is not a substitute for a holy life and an earth shaking message. It is the foundation for both.”
Questions:
1. Why do you think Paul EMPHASIZED grace?
2. Is preaching TRUE, REAL, grace ‘risky’? How? (“CAUTION- GRACE TAUGHT HERE!”)
3. There are two BASIC extremes (abuses)… what are they?
4. What is wrong with the following statement: “If you want to go to heaven, you must obey the commandments, do good works, and do so regularly, and consistently, and if you do not fail to in doing this…  you will be pleasing to God, and heaven will be yours.” Agree? Disagree? Why???
Danger – EXTREMES (ie Abuse) “ANYTIME GRACE IS TAKEN TO AN EXTREME – be it by LIMITING ITS APPLICATION, or USING IT AS A LIFE-LICENSE… it shows a lack of understanding/ appreciation for grace.” (Cf. Romans 6:1-2).

1. PERVERTED GRACE… (Galatians 1:6-8)
    A. WHY… was Paul “flabbergasted” with these Christians?
    B. What was being added to the Gospel which changed it to “another gospel”
(which was not really the Gospel?)
    C. Call it a ‘scam’, ‘fake’, or just plain ‘false’. Anytime you add something to grace, it
changes the essence of the Gospel. What are some examples of doing this
today? Why are scams, fakes, so convincing? (Discussion)
2.  LEGALISTIC GRACE… (Contradiction? How?)
    A. What is (define) ‘legalism’? (Give personal illustration)
1.) What does legalism (Strict adherence to the letter of law) do to grace?
         2.) Grace/Faith+Law/Works = Butterfly/Spider
3.) How is a legalistic attitude recognized?
4.) What does legalism do to a congregation? Restoration Movement?
    B. Illustration: Lady with the check list.
    C. Is it ok to “observe certain days, months, years etc…  as Holy?” (e.g. Christmas,
         Easter)
    D. What about ‘circumcision’ (Galatians 5:2-3; 4:10-11)? Cf. Timothy (Acts 16:3) and
Titus and Galatians 2:3. What’s the difference? Timothy fallen from grace???
    E. Why does legalism seem ‘easier’ than grace?
    F. “Freedom in Christ” (Sermon outline)
        1.) … Take it seriously (Galatians 5:1)
        2.) … Guard it courageously (Galatians 5:2-11)
        3.) … Use it lovingly (Galatians 5:13-14)
3. BUSINESSMAN’S GRACE (“Hey God, ‘let’s make a deal’!”)
     A. “Give me half, and I’ll earn the rest!” (“You prepare supper/ I’ll sing for it” grace).
     B. Illustration: Ruler
     C. Prodigal son vs elder brother “Will work for food!”/ “I have slaved for you!”
     D. Is GRACE a 50:50 PROPOSITION? Why? Why not?
     E. Consider the following: Salvation: It’s all (100%) grace on God’s part, and all
(100%) faith on man’s part. (Agree? Disagree? Why?)
     E. LET’S LOOK AT YOUR DRIVING RECORD!
4. RELIGIOUS GRACE
     A. The religious ‘check list system’.
     B. Luke 18:9-14 One felt justified… WHY?
     C. How can we ‘mess up’ like the Pharisee?
     D. “
The Pharisee rejected the love, mercy and forgiveness of God based on grace.
They just could not understand (comprehend) how God could be so gracious…
They depended on their law (commandment) keeping, their works as the
           foundation of their ‘worthiness’.
      E. The other, pleaded only for mercy, and received love, forgiveness and
           acceptance (grace).
      F.  Any appeal to law keeping, inward goodness, human works, tradition keeping,
achievements or levels of self-righteousness constitutes a rejection of the grace
           of God! (Romans 11:6).
